The Candidate

Hello, again!

I figured that with this post, I would take some time and help OCS with the marketing of The Candidate. The Candidate is a reality show that follows five MC seniors as they search for jobs.

My hope is that you will watch The Candidate sometime in the coming months, as well as encouraging any of your senior MC friends to apply for the show. The chosen applicants will receive a $50 Visa gift card, which is an incentive to apply.

But first, let me explain a few of the requirements. A few mandates to keep in mind:
  • Write and submit journal entries about your job search and related topics at least once a month
  • Compelete a resume review, mock interview, and networking efforts

  • Participate in quick and fun monthly challenges to win prizes

  • Participate in at least one OCS program per month

  • Participate in publicity for The Candidate around campus

There are, however, plenty of benefits to participating in The Candidate. Each participant receives:

  • a $50 Visa gift card
  • Individualized career counseling and motivation

  • Deadlines and goals to keep you on track and conduct a successful job search

  • Advice from employers on resumes and more

So, give participation in The Candidate some consideration. If you are an underclassmen and cannot participate, then tune in. There are also prizes for those who watch The Candidate.

I wish all participants luck with their job searches. Viel glück!

My First Official Post: Welcome to the OCS Blog

Hello! My name is Catherine Lange and I am the new Writing Specialist for the Office of Career Services. I am an English major, with minors in German and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). My goal for this blog is to compile useful information for students as they look toward graduating and moving on to a career or graduate school.

This particular post is an introduction to myself and the Office of Career Services (OCS). I want you,the student, to feel less as though these words tumbled here from cyberspace and more like OCS is a welcoming place. I know I frequently tell my friends that they should come to OCS and bring something for me to work on.

My job encompasses many things. Thus far, I have called graduates to fill out surveys, compiled paragraphs describing the majors offered at MC, helped a friend with his job search and application process, distributed promotional materials to faculty and coaches, created a newsletter for employers, and helped with promotional projects for OCS. It is my hope that my job encompasses more than this in the future: there is always something more to learn, and, subsequently, to do.

My future goals include teaching high school English until I can afford graduate school. Currently, my plans beyond graduation from MC are written in pencil. As we are so often reminded in life: things change.

I hope that this post, if nothing else, will bring you to Career Services for a resume review or job search. Please do not allow your future to rely on chance. A plan written in pencil is still a plan.
